HIGH WEST INTRODUCES SON OF BOURYE, THE NEXT GENERATION OF BLENDED WHISKIES

PARK CITY, UTAH (October 12, 2011) – High West Distillery & Saloon has announced the next generation of the distillery’s signature Bourye, the world’s only blend of straight bourbon and straight rye whiskies that’s married to create a mash-up of sweet and spicy. This second generation blended spirit, called Son of Bourye, was born from the original and well-received Bourye, but is made from a combination of younger bourbon and rye whiskies. The Son of Bourye will debut in Park City and Utah liquor stores on October 15 and will be available for national sale on October 24.

Crafted to be sipped on its own or mixed into a cocktail, the Son of Bourye is a versatile spirit, rich in vanilla and caramel with notes of orange clove and finished with a long, sweet wood flavor. The Son of Bourye features an undisclosed ratio of two whiskies, the bourbon including a mash bill of 75% corn, 20% and 5% barley malt, the rye at 95% rye and 5% barley malt. The Son of Bourye is barreled in new, charred Quercus Alba (white American oak) and bottled at 92 proof.

“We love to experiment with different types of bold whiskies,” said High West proprietor David Perkins. “The Son of Bourye is the result of tinkering with an idea and perfecting the ratios. The original Bourye has already become a legend, and the Son of Bourye is sure to attract even more lore.”

The original Bourye was created based on the mythology of the jackalope, a cross between a jackrabbit and antelope. With their native home in the American West, the jackalope would taunt cowboys and elude capture when chased. Legend suggests the best way to capture a jackalope was to lure it with whiskey, a favorite among the creature, until it became intoxicated and easier to catch. As an homage to the jackalope, the Son of Bourye label is an illustration of the creature, drawn by Jacob Theodor Klien in 1743.

Back Label

Jackalopes! Also called antelabbits, these are an antlered species of rabbit, a cross between a jackrabbit and an antelope. Supposedly, jackalopes continue to persist in their native home the American West. When cowboys gather by their campfires to sing at night, jackalopes are frequently heard singing back, mimicking the voices. When chased, the jackalope will use its vocal abilities to elude capture. For instance, when chased by people it will call out phrases such as, “There he goes, over there,” in order to throw pursuers off its track. Legend suggests the best way to catch a jackalope is to lure it with whiskey, which they are particularly fond of. Once intoxicated, the animal becomes slower and easier to hunt.

That’s why High West created the original Bourye. Now, the legend continues with Son of Bourye, also a blend of straight Bourbon and rye whiskies, sure to attract even the most finicky of jackalopes. The bourbon is a minimum of 5 years old with a 75% corn, 20% rye, 5% barley malt mashbill. The rye is a minimum of 2 years old made with 95% rye and 5% barley malt. Please see HighWest.com for specific details by batch # of the different whiskeys in this bottle – we like adjusting things somewhat every now and then according to our mood. Son of Bourye is best enjoyed around a campfire while looking at the Milky Way.

Important! Jackalopes will attack if cornered or provoked. To avoid injury, quickly fall to the ground, remain calm and still, while humming the Roy Rogers song, “Happy Trails to You.” If there are multiple Jackalopes, they will begin singing in the round. Make you escape after the second verse!
